ASBA advances public awareness and confidence in school boards and locally elected trustees through purposeful communications and engagement.
Under Strategic Priority Two, the Association undertook initiatives to further strengthen trust and understanding of the role of school boards and trustees across Alberta.
The October 2025 municipal election was a critical opportunity for communities to shape local leadership in Kindergarten to Grade 12 education. Electing trustees ensures that students, families and communities are represented by accountable leaders responsible for oversight and strategic direction at the board table.
ASBA developed and delivered a coordinated suite of resources throughout the election period including learning sessions and practical tools for prospective candidates, declared candidates, eligible voters, and new and returning trustees. These supports included the Guide for School Board Trustees; sessions that addressed legal, AI and campaign considerations; legislative overview fact sheets; and, an election toolkit outlining campaign activities and responsibilities.
Additionally, ASBA launched the 2025 Election Hub, providing clear and accessible information about the role of trustees and school boards. Short videos and downloadable resources supported the public and prospective trustees while a complementary social media campaign highlighted the impact of trustees and boards across Alberta.
Trustee readiness remained a central focus with orientation materials developed to ensure a strong transition following the election. For trustees not seeking re-election, ASBA initiated development of a legacy program designed to maintain engagement and share experience through a “for trustees, by trustees” network that sustains leadership capacity across the province.
The Innovation and Artificial Intelligence Committee completed its term focused on developments in the use of AI in K-12 settings, as well as learning opportunities for member boards. In support of this work, ASBA released its comprehensive Artificial Intelligence Policy Guidance for K-12 Education to assist boards as they review, develop and/or implement policies related to AI.
The guidance document outlines practical considerations to support ethical and responsible AI integration, including data privacy, equity, risk mitigation and opportunities to enhance student learning. It provides boards with a structured framework to inform policy development and oversight in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Public communications across traditional and social media platforms supported the Association’s objectives to increase awareness and strengthen understanding of the role of school boards and locally elected trustees.
Through proactive media relations and an expanded social media presence, ASBA amplified trustee leadership and highlighted advocacy priorities. This work reinforced the Association’s member-driven role and supported informed public discourse.
